Storing waste

2. How long can I store my waste?

You should not store waste for long periods of time as it inevitably gets contaminated. This will make further sorting and treatment more difficult and costly.

If you store waste indefinitely, your site will be classed as a landfill. You will need a permit.

Waste produced and stored on the same site

You can store waste produced on your farm for up to 12 months whilst you arrange for it to be collected for disposal. If the waste is to be recovered, you can store it for up to three years.

There is no limit on the amount of your own non-hazardous waste you can store, but you must store it securely.

If it is hazardous waste, you must limit the amount you store. The maximum amount of hazardous waste you can store is:

  • liquid waste - 23,000 litres
  • solid waste in a secure container - 80 cubic metres
  • solid waste in a secure place - 50 cubic metres

Waste produced on one site and stored at another

If you have more than one farm, you may produce waste at one farm and store it at another. For example, you may mend fences on one of your farms and bring the rotten fence posts back to your main farm for storage.

You can store solid waste (but not hazardous waste) from another site for up to three months. The waste must be stored in secure containers and you can only store up to 50 cubic metres of waste at any one time.
