Hazardous waste

4. When do I need to register as a hazardous waste producer?

If you produce hazardous waste, in most circumstances you must register your premises with the Environment Agency. If you produce hazardous waste on a farm, you do not need to register if you produce less than 500kg or 500 litres of hazardous waste a year. This limit will be reviewed. However, you must still use a consignment note to move your waste, regardless of this limit.

When calculating how much hazardous waste you produce, ignore the weight of any scrap vehicles as these do not count towards the 500kg limit.

If you do register, the Environment Agency will issue you with a unique registration code.

You can register by phone, online, email or by sending a paper form. The cost of registering varies according to the method you use. Online or email is the cheapest.
