Transporting waste
5. Consignment notes
When you pass hazardous waste to someone else you need to complete a consignment note and keep it for three years. The consignment note must contain similar information to a waste transfer note (WTN). A separate WTN is not required.
You could:
- produce your own consignment note
- use one produced by your waste contractor
- buy a single movement consignment note from the Environment Agency. These are three part forms, with one part for you to keep, one part for the waste carrier and one part for the person receiving your waste.
Contact the Environment Agency to buy a consignment note:

The Environment Agency has produced a leaflet to help you complete consignment notes. This includes a list of the European Waste Catalogue codes and descriptions for hazardous wastes that are commonly produced on farms.

Within four months of the hazardous waste leaving your site, the person who received your waste (the consignee) must send you a document called the 'Consignee's returns to a producer or holder'. This is to show that they have received hazardous waste from you. It will tell you what they have done with your waste, eg whether it was incinerated or transferred to another site. You should check that all of the loads of waste sent out of your site have been received and managed by matching the return to the consignment notes in your register.
